Also known as the seeds of Salvia hispanica, black chia is a nutrient-dense seed native to Mexico and Central America. A 100 gram serving delivers 30.7g fat (largely omega-3), 16.5g protein and 42g carbohydrate plus soluble fibre. Commonly used in chia pudding with plant milk, as an egg substitute in vegan baking (1 tbsp chia plus 3 tbsp water equals one egg), stirred into smoothies, or sprinkled on muesli.
