4 Spices to Excite Your Taste Buds

I think most people’s expertise when it comes to the use of spices in cooking stops with salt and pepper. There may be the odd one or two laying around in the cupboard that gets arbitrarily thrown in when you’re feeling naughty but that’s probably the extent of it. Spice not only enhances the taste of food but often has great health benefits. It is so easy to buy spices online

these days there’s really no excuse to not be incorporating it.

Spices come from dried plants, flowers, seeds, bark, roots etc. Some contain high amounts of minerals and antioxidants, others work well in healing with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Much of this however is unknown and sold on supermarket shelves in poor quality so as to reduce the effectiveness. A way around this is to buy good quality spice online. Below is a description of some of the most common herbs and spices you can easily incorporate into your cooking and their uses/benefits.

Turmeric is a staple of Indian cuisine. It adds the yellow colouring and earthy flavouring to curry. Turmeric also has great anti-inflammatory properties. It is however poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. To get around this add black pepper to your turmeric. Black pepper contains piperine which enhances the absorption of the anti-inflammatory component of turmeric by about 2000%. Graina has turmeric available in bulk online

in three forms:

  • Organic powder
  • Regular powder
  • Whole turmeric root

BBQ Spice Mix

I love BBQ spice mixes because of the convenience. It can be off putting using spice if you have never done so before. Pre-made BBQ spice mixes take all the hassle out and can easily increase the flavour profile of your food. For example, there are fish, tofu, beef and pork BBQ spice mixes available for bulk purchase online at Graina.

There are two types of cinnamon; cassia and ceylon. Cassia is the cheaper form and is the most readily available. Ceylon (or true cinnamon) is slightly more expensive but much higher in quality. Where possible try and find the Ceylon cinnamon. Buying spices online is a great way to achieve this if you don’t have access to a health food store

Cinnamon is great for baking or used in sweet dishes like cereals or deserts. It is packed with antioxidants and helps fight against harmful bacteria in the body. I like to use cinnamon as a pseudo sweetener, it’s a great way to cut sugar out of your diet.

When talking to people I find chilli is quite polarising. Either love it or hate it kinda thing. When used properly in cooking though it doesn’t have to be something that sets your mouth on fire and running for the milk. I love that subtle zing, that little kiss from devil on the tip of your tongue. When used in moderation this naughty little hit can bring dishes to life and enhances other flavours.

Aside from the culinary benefits there’s also an upside for your health. Chilli contains seven times the vitamin C of an orange. Sit that fruit aside and get a hit of chilli like a grown man. Along with this chilli is great for:

  • Clearing sinus congestion
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Reducing contamination on food
  • Boosting your metabolism

The Bottom Line

Introducing spice into your diet may seem a hassle but once you get in the groove the benefits are incredible. It is important though to find the best quality spice to get the most flavour and health benefits. Look at reviews and buy spice online and/or in bulk for convenience. If my experience Is anything to go by your food is going to taste better, and you are going to feel better.
